Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935), was an American writer, publisher and activist. After the birth of her daughter, she became severely depressed and was treated by an "alienist" who believed the cure was total isolation from anything mentally stimulating. Her most famous story "The Yellow Wallpaper," came from this experience. After her divorce, Gilman became a feminist and a prolific writer. She wrote and published the monthly magazine, "The Forerunner" for seven years. What Diantha Did was serialized in "The Forerunner."
